Sigma Kappa provides valuable leadership development opportunities to its members. As an organization Sigma Kappa encourages our members to be involved in at least one extracurricular activity during their collegiate experience. Because of this focus on involvement outside of Sigma Kappa, our sisters are able to engage with the campus and community in ways that are important to them.
When we're not studying, we know how to kick back and have some fun! Here are some of the events we participated in last year:
Walk to End Alzheimer's:
Last year, we volunteered as Human Selfie Sticks, interviewing everyone participating in the walk and documenting the event. In addition, we helped set up, cheered people on, and passed out water bottles. It was a great day raising money for an even greater cause.
Bone Marrow Drive:
In January 2017, we swabbed 253 people from Mines to be added to the Bone Marrow Registry. With help from DKMS and Genny's Hope Foundation, we took our own samples, and many of our own sisters are now on the bone marrow registry. A few have even traveled across the country to donate their bone marrow or stem cells!
Mr. Big Digger:
Each E-Days, we kick off the weekend with our male beauty pageant, Mr. Big Digger. With Formal Attire, Swimwear, and Talent as our categories, we recruit the president of each sorority and one special faculty member to judge the competition. Our male contestants represent groups all over campus: fraternities, athletic teams, and even the marching band!
Each year, the Colorado School of Mines Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council get together to plan a week of fun and bonding for all Greek life members on campus! Our members not only attend each event, but help plan and set up events as well! Highlights from last year include the Talent Night and the Crawfish Boil.
Formal and Semiformal:
With Semiformal in fall and Formal in spring, these events are opportunities for our chapter to get together, bring our closest friends and loved ones, and see the amazing sights of Colorado. Semiformal 2016 was a group trip to see the Denver Nuggets play at the Pepsi Center, and Formal 2017 was a gorgeous dance at the Christies of Genesee!
Whether it's a planned dodgeball tournament or a impromptu Disney movie night, we spend more quality time with each other than anything else. Past events include 'Donut You Love Karaoke?' and '90's Rollerblade Night!' Even studying can be fun with our sisters!
